Vast basalt lava flows, ash-spewing volcano eruptions and cataclysmic megafloods define the geology of Eastern Washington and the soils of our vineyards. The vines are located within the Wahluke Slope, the Horseheaven Hills, and the Columbia Valley AVAs, allowing us to best match each site's microclimate with the grape varieties that grow best there.

Our winery is perched above the Ahtanum Valley at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains west of Yakima and sits on property that has been in the Gilbert family for 5 generations. Originally owned by the Hackett family and used as a cattle ranch, the farm was planted to apples, pears, cherries, and peaches in the 1920s and 1930s by the Richey & Gilbert fruit company. The property remained entirely in tree fruit until 2003, when the first wine grapes and lavendar were planted on the East 40 on a block known as Bocz's Hillside. In 2005-2006 the steel-frame orchard shop was renovated to house the winery, and in 2008 a cave was dug into the side of the hill in front of the winery for barrel storage, which allows to produce and store around 5000 cases of each vintage on site.
